Tips for Seniors & Those Who Care for Seniors

Health Tips for Easing Arthritis Pain and Stiffness at Work
Sitting at a desk and working at a computer all day can be painful for those suffering with arthritis.  The Arthritis Foundation offers these suggestions to make work less painful.

  • Take regular breaks every 20 minutes to 30 minutes, getting up to stretch and move around.
  • Make sure your desk chair fits you well, and sit with your feet flat on the floor.
  • Set up your computer screen so it's level with your eyes.
  • Place papers in a document holder so they're easier to see without straining.

If your chair lacks lumbar support, use a rolled-up towel or small pillow to provide better support for your lower back.

Should You Be Concerned About Your Loved One?
If your parent or elderly loved one has been acting out of character, it could be a sign that they need advanced care services — or, it could be nothing. Before you get worried, get informed.  Here are the specific changes you should watch for:

  • Personal hygiene problems
  • Home in disarray or needing to be cleaned
  • Weight loss or weight gain - check for spoiled food or insufficient food in the home
  • Failure to manage medications or medical appointments
  • Increased difficulty with mobility (such as climbing stairs or using a bathtub)
  • Changes in judgment, mood, or overall behavior
  • Increased forgetfulness - check for unopened mail or unread newspapers
  • Missed bill payments or other financial difficulties
  • Unusual or extravagant purchases that are out of character
  • Decreased social activities or failing to maintain friendships

Check with the family physician or other health professional to find the help they may need.
